Adjusting Expectations: Changing Perceptions of Native Americans and Contemporary Native American Artwork

Robert Martinez was born on the Wind River Reservation in Riverton, Wyoming. He attended Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design and in 3 years he graduated becoming the youngest Native American to graduate at that time. His Northern Arapaho & Chicano heritage remains a constant inspiration and source of ideas for his work. Living in Wyoming amongst the hard-working people of the west and experiencing their issues also influenced his creations.  The past and present often resonate strongly throughout his work. Robert was recently honored with his home state’s highest creative honor, the Wyoming Governor’s Art Award.  You can see select pieces of his work at the Boulder Museum from December 2nd, 2021 through February 14, 2022, and as part of the permanent collection for the Smithsonian National Museum for the American Indian in Washington DC, The Plains Indian Museum at the Bill Cody Center of the West, The Brinton Museum, and the Red Cloud Heritage Museum.

KGNU Presents: Hunter Burnette & Heavy Diamond Ring

KGNU Presents: Hunter Burnette & Heavy Diamond Ring

Door Time: 7:30 PM
Showtime: 8 PM

Hunter Burnette is an up-and-coming Americana singer/songwriter and artist based out of Denver, Colorado. In 2018 Burnette released his debut EP, “The Good Life,” which won over the hearts of audiences and local musicians alike. Colorado Hall of Fame inductee, Chris Daniels, called him “One of the most exciting Americana/Country/Roots songwriters and performers to come out of the West in the past few years.” Burnette released a follow-up Self-Titled EP in October 2019, produced by Ben Wysocki and Eric Tate. Backed by a rotating cast of extraordinary musicians, including members of The Fray, Heavy Diamond Ring, Smirk, Israel Nash, King Cardinal and more, you don’t want to miss seeing this budding act making his mark on the Colorado music scene.

Heavy Diamond Ring
Thirteen years after founding indie-folk giants Paper Bird, Sarah Anderson (vocals, trumpet) and Paul DeHaven (guitar) embark on their latest collaboration, Heavy Diamond Ring. HDR harnesses their proven partnership and their trademark open-hearted All-American folk-rock, and sends it to refreshing new heights. Led by Anderson’s smooth-as-honey vocals and DeHaven’s rugged guitar chops, the band is rounded out by veteran knockouts Blake Stepan (bass), Mike Lang (keys), and Orion Tate Ignelzi (drums). This is road-trip music. This is black and gold. This is HDR. Find their debut album everywhere June 7th.
