Molly Mitchell

Molly Mitchell

Door Time: 7:00 PM
Showtime: 7:30 PM

Climbing bold, intimidating routes doesn’t seem like it would be at the top of the list for someone living with an anxiety disorder. But for Molly, it empowers her. With her ascent of “China Doll,” 5.14 R in Boulder Canyon, she became the seventh woman in the world to climb a 5.14 rated traditional route – and tied for the youngest female as well. But what happens when the exact thing that gives her confidence, ends up traumatizing her? Join Molly as she delves into her climbing career battling mental illness, and the aftermath of taking a 30 foot fall to the ground in October 2020. Her speech will discuss her road to success, and how a broken back that’s now healed physically, has affected her mind and identity as a climber for the long haul.

Molly Mitchell is a professional rock climber who lives in Longmont, CO. At 28 years old, she has already achieved a lifelong goal of climbing a traditional route rated 5.14 (placing all her own gear), with her 2019 send of “China Doll,” located in Boulder Canyon. In October 2020, she took a 30 foot ground fall on a different route in Boulder Canyon and fractured two vertebrae. She is also very open over the years about her struggle with mental illness (anxiety and depression) and how the accident has affected her mental health greatly. She is a speaker for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Today she is back climbing again, but with a much different perspective and a lot of growth that she feels had to happen in her climbing journey.

Bill Briggs grew up in Boulder, learned to climb in the Flatirons and nearby canyons, and has climbed and run in the Colorado Rockies all his life.

Vicky Hamilton, “NASA’s OSIRIS-REx Mission: Saying Goodbye to Asteroid Bennu and Preparing to Say Hello to the Returned Sample”

Vicky Hamilton, “NASA’s OSIRIS-REx Mission: Saying Goodbye to Asteroid Bennu and Preparing to Say Hello to the Returned Sample”

Door Time: 7:00 PM
Showtime: 7:30 PM

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission seeks answers to some of human-kind’s oldest questions. Where did we come from? What is our destiny? Bennu, a carbonaceous asteroid, may contain the molecular precursors to the origin of life and Earth’s oceans. Bennu is also one of the most potentially hazardous asteroids, as it has a relatively high probability of impacting the Earth late in the 22nd century. OSIRIS-REx arrived at asteroid Bennu in December 2018 and has spent the time since then collecting imaging, topographic, and spectral data that have enabled the team to determine Bennu’s physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties. Important results of the mission are that Bennu’s surface is dominated by minerals containing water, and that the surface appears to have experienced geologic processing in the last few hundreds of thousands to millions of years. Bennu’s size, primitive composition, and potentially hazardous orbit make it one of the most fascinating and accessible NEOs … and the ideal OSIRIS-REx target asteroid.

Dr. Vicky Hamilton will share insights from OSIRIS-REx’s final year of asteroid operations, the sample collection event, and predictions for the returned sample.

Seth Walker is often cited as one of the most prolific contemporary Americana artists on the scene today. He’s a multi-dimensional talent who combines a gift for melody and lyric alongside a rich, Gospel-drenched, Southern-inflected voice with a true blue knack for getting around on the guitar. His most recent studio album, Are You Open, produced by Jano Rix of The Wood Brothers, and a string of singles, including “We Got This,” “Spirits Moving” and a cover of Van Morrison’s classic “Warm Love” further build upon this reputation.

Most recently, Walker added published author to his oeuvre with his first memoir, ‘Your Van Is On Fire.’ A riotous and charming melange of a touring musician’s life, the book is comprised of many short essays, poems and paintings he’d accumulated over a near 30-year career. Written during the 2020 lockdown, Walker offers a first hand account of an artist in perpetual motion who’s dedicated his life to chasing the muse wherever it may lead.

Seth Walker is currently based in Asheville, NC after previously residing in Austin, New Orleans and Nashville. He’s used those experiences wisely, soaking up the sounds and absorbing the musical lineage of these varied places. With a bluesman’s respect for roots and tradition, coupled with an appreciation for—and successful melding of—contemporary songwriting, Seth sublimely incorporates a range of styles with warmth and grace. Perhaps Country Standard Time said it best: “If you subscribe to the Big Tent theory of Americana, then Seth Walker –with his blend of blues, gospel, pop, R&B, rock, and a dash country—just might be your poster boy.”
