Hadelich Plays Beethoven’s Violin Concerto

Hadelich Plays Beethoven’s Violin Concerto

Doors: 6:45 PM

Conductor:
Peter Oundjian

Guest Artist:
Augustin Hadelich, violin Artist-in-Residence

Delight in Beethoven’s only violin concerto, a vivacious and melodic treasure that Music Director Peter Oundjian calls “the pinnacle of all violin concertos.” This masterpiece requires as skilled a musician as the Grammy-winning Augustin Hadelich, an artist of “scarcely believable commitment” (New York Times); this concert is Hadelich’s second program as the Festival’s 2021 artist-in-residence. Bartók once said of his fellow composer that “all Kodály’s composing activity is rooted only in Hungarian soil” — hear a fine example of Kodály’s flair for folk in his Dances of Galánta. Weber’s overture to his opera Oberon adds drama to this program from its very first horn solo.

This performance will be delivered both in person and virtually. Each in-person ticket purchase also grants access to the virtual performance. If you would prefer to attend the virtual concert only, see the full list of virtual concerts or purchase a Virtual Concerts package here

Program:
Carl Maria von Weber, Oberon Overture
Zoltán Kodály, Dances of Galánta

Before intermission we explore three of Tower’s seminal works: her Duets for chamber orchestra; the fifth in  her series of fanfares spotlighting adventurous women; and her Made in America, which in turns examines, celebrates, and unsettles the song “America the Beautiful.”

This week’s installation of the Robert Mann Chamber Music Series explores two pieces by Beethoven including his most popular composition during his lifetime, his Septet. Program:
Ludwig van Beethoven, Quintet for Piano and Winds in E-flat Major, Op. 16

Beethoven Op. 131 + Hannah Lash’s World Premiere

Door Time: 6:45 PM

Conductor:
Peter Oundjian

Guest Artist:
Ji Su Jung, marimba

This Beethoven-infused program opens with a world premiere commissioned by the Festival and composed by the “striking and resourceful” Hannah Lash (New York Times); her new Forestallings is directly inspired by Beethoven’s Second Symphony. Continuing our look at Beethoven through another lens, we also experience Music Director Peter Oundjian’s own string orchestra arrangement of Beethoven’s groundbreaking String Quartet Op. 131; after hearing this deeply moving quartet, Schubert remarked, “After this, what is left for us to write?” Also on this evening’s program is Kevin Puts’ Marimba Concerto — marimba virtuoso Ji Su Jung returns to perform this lyrical work full of nods to Mozart.

This performance will be delivered both in person and virtually. Each in-person ticket purchase also grants access to the virtual performance. If you would prefer to attend the virtual concert only, see the full list of virtual concerts or purchase a Virtual Concerts package here.

Program:
Hannah Lash, Forestallings (World premiere commission) (2019-2020)
